The work of Los Angeles artist Alexis Zoto is inspired by her Albanian Orthodox heritage, art history, antiquities, family stories and her personal experiences as a woman, wife and mother. Her work is distinctly feminine and feminist. The starting point of the work is found materials such as a piece of discarded furniture found on the street and family lore/cautionary tales. Often these stories highlight struggles with acculturation. Drawing from both from high and low culture as a source of inspiration and materials,  she uses buttons, birds, lace, plates, chandelier, motifs from traditional Albanian textiles, furniture parts, and evil eye amulets in her work to connect the past to the present, the personal to the public, and the intimate to art history.

 Mixed_messages_modifiedarts_0313_13

This week we bring you the works of Arizona based artist Kristin Bauer.

Kristin Bauer wants you to not only read her artworks visually but literally as well. Working in a wide array of media from neon to assemblage to painting, Bauer combines and mixes high and low iconography, imagery, and texts that will make you play a mental game of connect the dots. Unlike most stories however, Bauer’s works aren’t supposed to have a beginning, middle, and end – leaving the viewer to fill in the blanks between her references to anything from Renaissance sculpture to Jayne Mansfield, Shakespeare to Spielberg films, The Great Gatsby to Cheap Trick.

This week we are pleased to present the work of Mark Francis Williams.

The powerful black and white monoprints of Romanian artist Mark Francis Williams look like eroding ghost-like portraits of ancestors who passed many decades ago. In a constant flux between abstraction and representation, the haunting figures appear and disappear over and over again like a distant memory that you can’t quite put together but also can’t forget.

Made With Color Presents: Evelyn Henriquez’s Struggle And Transformation Of The Female Body

Posted on January 01, 2014

Evelyn_henriquez_05

This week we are happy to share the work and website of Evelyn Henriquez.

The Water Box series was conceived by Evelyn Henriquez as a further exploration of the body, specifically the female form, portrayed in a moment of struggle and perhaps transformation where the lines between fear, anxiety, comfort and resolution become blurred. This initial idea translated into images of an adult woman confined to a 48″ x 15″ x 17″  fish tank.  In each instance, the model was left to reconcile herself with the water, the tank, and ultimately with her own body. The resulting images capture this process; a psychological, emotional, and physical state that, though under the watchful eye of the camera lens, magnifies the isolated, insulated, and at times meditative state of each model.

Website builder Made With Color doesn’t just help artists create minimal and mobile/tablet responsive websites but allows them to do so in a few minutes without having to touch a line of code. This week we are happy to share the work of talented painter Marie Irmgard.

Berlin based artist Marie Irmgard’s paintings are a dizzying swirl of gesture, form, and abstraction. Each painting is suspended in a state between abstraction and depiction, ever fluctuating between now-you-see-it, now-you-don’t. Both the subject matter and the method of the paintings contains the tensions of contradiction – the paintings are created in an madman’s spontaneous loss of control and at the same time the precise brushstrokes and compositions shows extreme control.

There is something violent and dangerous about Irmgard’s paintings – her still-life flower paintings is in the borderline of beauty, death and decay and fluctuates between the repulsive and the seductive, objects decaying into abstraction.

Irmgard’s source material is combining history and story; autobiographical reminisces are put alongside with present day commercials. Pieces of a Delacroix painting are transformed into turbulent layers and swirls in a contradicting combination of eloquence and clumsiness. She uses trash form her studio, organic waste, broken mechanical objects to create a hybrid iconography that is full of melancholy but also hope. Irmgard uses acrylic and ink and will often leave her work in big jugs or bathtubs – so that both the wooden frame and the canvas are soaked in paint-water. Up to the point where both the wood and the cloth is almost decomposing – she will experiment in just how worn and ugly can you make a piece and still save it – how much can you kill a painting and still bring it back to life.

See more of Marie Irmgard’s paintings on her new site built on the Madewithcolor.com website building platform here.
